Isner vs. Del Potro to replace Monfils’ Feature Match
Due to a left wrist injury, Gael Monfils has indicated he will be out for the next four to six weeks of tournament play. Monfils has pulled out of the Regions Morgan Keegan Championships, Acapulco, and Davis Cup play in Austria. After reaching the semifinals of the SAP Open, he was forced to withdraw, which automatically sent his opponent and RMKC wildcard Milos Raonic to the final.
“Gael Monfils, and RMKC’s No. 3 seed has been forced to withdraw due to a wrist injury,” said Tournament Director Peter Lebedevs. “While we are disappointed he will not make his Memphis debut, the depth of our field still guarantees the best tennis we have ever had.”
Replacing Monfils’ featured Wednesday night match will be one of the most dangerous matches of the tournament. Wildcard Juan Martin Del Potro will play last year’s Doubles winner and Singles finalist, John Isner. While Del Potro may have fallen in rank during 2010 due to a wrist injury, the wildcard is a former No. 4, and 2009’s U.S. Open winner.
Both Isner and Del Potro have height on their side, measuring 6’9’’ and 6’6’’ respectively. Isner’s big serve set the record at 2010’s Wimbledon for most aces ever, while Del Potro is known for his big forehand.
“Del Potro is hungry for a win,” said Lebedevs, “and he chose America as the location of his comeback, first playing the SAP Open, then the Regions Morgan Keegan Championships, followed by Del Ray Beach.”
