I'm looking to start stringing my own racquets to save money long-term. Budget is around $300-500, but flexible for quality. I play 2-3 times weekly, mostly singles.

Key questions:

Drop weight vs. crank vs. electronic?
Portable or tabletop?
Which brands are reliable in my price range?
Any specific models recommended for beginners?
Maintenance considerations?
Appreciate any advice from experienced stringers!

As a beginner stringer who started last year, I went with the Gamma Progression II and couldn't be happier. It's around $300-350 which is a sweet spot for beginners - sturdy enough to produce consistent results but not breaking the bank. The manual tensioning is actually great for learning proper technique, and the drop weight system is reliable and forgiving. I've strung about 60 rackets so far and it's holding up perfectly.

If budget allows ($600-700), consider a used electronic machine like an older Gamma 5003 or 6004. Yes, it's more expensive, but the constant-pull electric tensioning makes stringing much easier and more consistent. I started on a drop weight but upgraded within 6 months because I was stringing for friends too. No regrets on the investment.

For a true beginner, I think the Alpha Pioneer DC is hard to beat. About $400, drop weight system that's accurate and easy to use, and it comes with a really helpful instructional guide. The 2-point mounting system is simpler than 6-point systems when you're learning. I'm still using mine after 3 years and 200+ string jobs.
